the stadium inaugurated on 17 june 1923 match between castellón , cervantes under name campo del villarreal (villarreal field), becoming renamed 2 years later in honour rural lands on erected. nicknamed feudo amarillo ( yellow feud ), located @ plaza labrador, 5 kilometres away mediterranean sea, , @ altitude of 50 metres.
the first remodeling works took place on stadium in close season before 1952–53 season. size of pitch taken 95 x 65 m 105 x 65 m, matching of helsinki olympic stadium of 1952 summer olympics, reference copy during years.
during 1960s club erected small covered stand, , during 1971–72 season southern stands finished. in 1988 demolished make room new stand opened on 8 march 1989 friendly match against atlético madrid.
for club s 75th anniversary new renovation works started. south stand again demolished erect new 1 roof, amphitheatre, vip sector, , northern stand built, finishing works @ 1999–2000 season.
the stadium first floodlit night matches on 16 september 1973 third division match between villarreal , ibiza. city hall provided construction of floodlight towers located @ each of 4 corners of field, 9 halogen lamps on top of each one.
the changing rooms moved several times. until 1935–36 season @ south eastern corner of stadium, @ north east until 1989, when moved south western part. after last modifications stadium, under main stand.
on 8 january 2017, before la liga match against barcelona, villarreal changed name of stadium el madrigal estadio de la cerámica (english: ceramics stadium) recognising local industry.
