the group set in 2009 rachel wolf, former adviser boris johnson , michael gove, secretary of state @ department education. wolf started group after visiting new york city whilst working gove , observing city s charter schools groups such knowledge power program , new york city charter school center, advise new schools in city.


by february 2010 around 3 hundred free school applicant groups had registered interest network. in june 2010 free school programme became part of government policy , in september 2011 first 24 free schools opened pupils. network worked 22 of these schools, including journalist toby young in project set new west london free school in hammersmith. 79 groups have outline permission open schools in september 2012, network working 61 of these.


the charity supports free school applicants through development programme , helps groups running training events providing advice , through publications. employs number of advisers , education specialists. in may 2010, department education awarded group £500,000 advise on behalf of department groups setting new schools.


in november 2011, following competitive bidding process, department education approved grant funding of maximum of £400,000 2011–2012 , £650,000 in 2012-2013 along proposals spend £600m on building 100 new free schools in england on next 3 years.


in 2013, then-current chief operating officer natalie evans assumed role of director of nsn on departure of rachel wolf. succeeded nick timothy in july 2015, subsequently replaced toby young in january 2017.
