the location hofje called hof van zessen. in 1815 plans made build museum there (the first building called museum in leiden). opened in 1820, , until 1913, museum opened public on sundays. in 1913, museum moved new building, little room available exhibits, , in 1950, room closed. after that, there few opportunities guided tours, attending lectures, , temporary exhibitions.


in 1976, paper, towards new museum , produced. led museum taking on more of central curating role, lending pieces collection other museums. rijksmuseum van natuurlijke historie , rijksmuseum van geologie en mineralogie merged in 1984. permanent public exhibition still not present. came in 1986, when so-called national presentation in field of natural history commissioned dutch government. planning began new building, completed in 1990 , launched in 1998 naturalis .
