when decommissioned in 1974, oldest naval hospital in service in united states , consisted of 88 acres (360,000 m) of land on mystic river. notable patients during hospital s history include presidents john quincy adams (after presidency) , john f. kennedy (before presidency). original hospital buildings converted condominiums while adjacent land dotted single family townhouses , high rise apartment complexes. still extant perimeter wall , guard shack, pier, chapel, ordnance buildings, nurses quarters, , captain s house. in addition redevelopment of housing , hospital portion of property, several acres on mystic river taken on metropolitan district commission mary o malley park.
