early in summer of 1922, maxwell , friends went drive in countryside north of philadelphia. returning night, maxwell noticed car stopped directly in front of him on road. fearing holdup, sped go around car , ran head-on truck taking group of boy scouts home picnic. according nan pollock, 1 of in maxwell s party, maxwell pinned beneath wreckage. told friends others! can wait.


maxwell spent next few days in hospital located in norristown, pennsylvania, suffering 7 broken ribs, punctured lung , dislocated hip. pneumonia developed, , delirium followed. on night of june 29, maxwell visited neighbor , close friend, charles heeb. emerging delirium talked of packing bags , going home. take 2 hours sleep, , ll go you, heeb told him. maxwell agreed , drifted off sleep later died.


in 1937, maxwell football club founded in philadelphia award trophies in name , promote football safety. club annually awards maxwell award best college football player in nation, determined panel of sportscasters, sportswriters, , ncaa head coaches , membership of maxwell football club.


he elected college football hall of fame in 1974.
