southwest alaska sparsely inhabited region stretching 500 miles (800 km) inland bering sea. of population lives along coast. kodiak island located in southwest. massive yukon–kuskokwim delta, 1 of largest river deltas in world, here. portions of alaska peninsula considered part of southwest, remaining portions included aleutian islands (see below).
