land @ new yarmouth first granted loyalist john hall in 1785 , later granted alexander , john grant in 1819, although neither of these families appear have settled @ new yarmouth. 1873, copps , brown families had settled in community. expansion of lumbering in cape chignecto area in late 1800s brought more families area. 1904, community had 10 homes , school located around intersection of new yarmouth road , eatonville road. wasson family became important landowners in new yarmouth in period, contracting out timber lands, running lumber camps mills , providing horse teams. collapse in timber prices in 1920s caused many mills close , logging operations around new yarmouth declined. school house closed , moved nearby advocate converted dwelling. 1950s isolation , opportunities elsewhere led last few families leave, similar fate shared nearby eatonville part of postwar abandonment of isolated farming , forestry communities in cumberland county. land used blueberry harvesting , pulp wood harvesting minas basin pulp , paper company , later scott paper. minas basin pulp , paper built fire out tower @ new yarmouth in 1940s. royal canadian air force proposed building combined radar , fire tower @ new yarmouth in 1960 fill gap in pine tree line radar system post never built. fire tower later taken on nova scotia s department of natural resources , staffed many years lloyd e. bennett of advocate until retirement in 1999. fire tower , cabin remained staffed seasonally department of natural resources until 2012. fire tower closed in 2013 department of natural resources part of province-wide move replace fire towers air patrols , citizen reporting , demolished in june 2015.
