the first grand lodge formed on 24 june feast day of john baptist in 1717. may arise old tradition, since baptist appears have been regarded patron of stonemasons in continental europe during middle ages. guild of masons , carpenters attached cologne cathedral known fraternity of st. john baptist. earliest surviving record of grand lodge of ireland installing grand master dated 24 june 1725. records of individual lodges appear in ireland , in antients in england, seems many of them met install new master twice year, on feast days of both baptist , evangelist.
