Neurolytic block Interventional pain management
cross section of spinal cord showing subarachnoid cavity, , spinal nerve roots including dorsal root ganglion
a neurolytic block deliberate injury of nerve application of chemicals (in case procedure called neurolysis ) or physical agents such freezing or heating ( neurotomy ). these interventions cause degeneration of nerve s fibers , temporary interference transmission of pain signals. in these procedures, thin protective layer around nerve fiber, basal lamina, preserved that, damaged fiber regrows, travels within basal lamina tube , connects correct loose end, , function may restored. surgically cutting nerve severs these basal lamina tubes, , without them channel regrowing fibers lost connections, painful neuroma or deafferentation pain pain may develop. why neurolytic preferred on surgical block.
