maimansingh, district of british india, in maimansingh division of eastern bengal , assam. occupies portion of alluvial valley of brahmaputra east of main channel (called jamuna) , north of dacca. administrative headquarters @ nasirabad, called mymensingh town. area, 6332 sq mi pop. (1901) 3,915,068, showing increase of 12.8% in decade. district part level , open, covered well-cultivated fields, , intersected numerous rivers.
the district acquired east india company dewani grant mughal emperor in 1765. @ time greater part included in niabat (sub-province of dhaka , small portion in zamindaries of atia, kagmari, pukuria , patilandaha (of rahahahi zamindari). @ time of permanent settlement, included northwest garo-hills , brahmandaria subdivision of present comilla district did not include north tangail , north-west part of jamalpur. in 1799 taluk amirabad transferred tippera (comilla). in 1809, patiladaha, situated north-east of brahmaputra came district form rangpur. in 1811, river banar , brahmaputra declared boundary between dhaka , mymensingh district , river brahmaputra , meghna boundary between tippera (now comilla) , mymensingh , dhaka. in 1811 west gar-hills transferred rangpur district. in 1812 patiladaha, retransferred rangpur. in 1830, parganas sarail, daudpur, haripur, bejra, , satarakhandal, transferred tippera , public convenience. in 1855, due change in river course part or serajganj thana transferred mymensingh pabna , in 1866, whole of transferred pabna. in 1866, thana dewangajn transferred mymensingh form bogra , thana atia dhaka. in 1867 administrative convenience boundaries of 5 subdivisions (including tangail) , thanaswere notified. in 1874 on basis of survey, district boundaries notified. in 1874 jamuna (or daokoba) river declared western boundary between mymensingh , bogra , such, 165 villages transferred bogra. in 1875, brahmaputra made boundary between mymensingh , rangpur , portion of patiladaha, east of river, transferred district form rangpur. in 1877, jamuna declared boundary between pabna , mymensingh, in west. on first of december 1969, tangail subdivision separated mymensingh , new district of tangail formed. in 1977 new district jamalpur (including sherpur) formed.
