after serving professor of physics , chemistry @ williams college 1869–72, returned yale, first professor of molecular physics , chemistry until 1887. in 1883, yale able open first laboratory in country dedicated physics research (the sloane physics laboratory) because of wright s influence , friendship henry t. sloane , thomas c. sloane, siblings , yale alumni. in 1911, second sloane laboratory, endowed sloanes, first building completed on science hill. endowed fellowship graduate students @ laboratory. 1887 until retirement in 1906, professor of experimental physics.
on january 27, 1896, wright produced x-ray photograph, barely month after wilhelm röntgen s seminal paper on new kind of rays published on december 28, 1895. first x-ray image produced in country. contributed numerous scientific papers, chiefly on astronomical , electrical subjects, various publications. fellow of royal astronomical society of great britain , of american association advancement of science member of national academy of sciences , american physical society.
on october 7, 1875 married susan forbes silliman, oldest daughter of benjamin silliman, jr., professor of chemistry @ yale. had 3 children, susan, dorothy , arthur. wife died on february 17, 1890. retired in 1906 , died @ home in new haven on december 19, 1915.
