in 1763, louis xv (via duc de choiseul) reorganised french cavalry. new school officers cavalry regiments set @ saumur, managed , supervised corps royal des carabiniers - since inception school has been hosted in carabinier regiment s quarter of town, latterly in magnificent 18th century building. functioned until 1788. @ end of 1814, after first restoration, louis xviii set École d instruction des troupes à cheval in saumur. activities declined 1822 onwards regenerated charles x under name of École royale de cavalerie (later renamed École impériale de cavalerie de saumur). of building complex taken military riding area , riding-academy training hall. 1830, disappearance of École de versailles, saumur became capital , sole repository of french equestrian tradition, , knowledge (such in cadre noir , training regime in dressage) still recognised throughout world. @ end of second world war french cavalry (mainly in reconnaissance role point) , armoured troops merged form arme blindée et cavalerie (abc), École de saumur becoming new branch s training centre.


after 1985 reorganisation, 12th light armoured division (12 dlb) planned mobilisation division of french army, headquarters formed on basis of staff of École d application de l arme blindée et de la cavalerie (eaabc) @ saumur. division comprised 507 rcc @ saumur (amx-30s), 3 rch(t), @ saumur , attached eaabc, legion s 4th foreign regiment @ castelnaudary, , 33rd regiment of artillery (ra), @ st maixent, attached nco school.
