biography

li born in 1981 in saarbrücken, germany (then west germany). parents both taiwanese immigrants living in germany. went french-german high school in saarbrücken , speaks 4 languages fluently (english, german, french, , mandarin chinese). obtained diplom (eq. m.sc.) in computer science @ karlsruhe institute of technology (then university of karlsruhe (th)) in 2006 , phd in computer science @ eth zurich in 2010. visiting researcher @ ensimag in 2003, national university of singapore in 2006, stanford university in 2008, , epfl in 2010. postdoctoral fellow @ columbia university , princeton university between 2011 , 2012.

career

li joined industrial light & magic / lucasfilm in 2012 research lead develop next generation real-time performance capture technologies virtual production , visual effects. in 2013, became tenure-track assistant professor of computer science @ university of southern california. in 2014, spent summer visiting professor @ weta digital advancing facial tracking , hair digitization technologies visual effects of furious 7 , hobbit: battle of 5 armies. in 2015, founded pinscreen, inc., augmented reality , social media startup based on research in 3d human capture. in 2016, appointed director of vision , graphics lab @ usc institute creative technologies.

research

he best known work on dynamic geometry processing , data-driven techniques making 3d human digitization , facial animation accessible masses. during phd, li co-created first real-time , markerless system performance-driven facial animation based on depth sensors won best paper award @ acm siggraph / eurographics symposium on computer animation in 2009. team later commercialized variant of technology facial animation software faceshift (acquired apple inc. in 2015 , incorporated iphone x in 2017). technique in deformable shape registration used company c-rad ab , deployed in hospitals tracking tumors in real-time during radiation therapy. in 2013, introduced home scanning system uses kinect capture people game characters or realistic miniature versions. technology licensed artec , released free software shapify.me. in 2014, brought on visiting professor @ weta digital build high-fidelity facial performance capture pipeline reenacting deceased actor paul walker in movie furious 7 (2015).

his recent research focuses on combining techniques in deep learning , computer graphics facilitate creation of 3d avatars , enable true immersive face-to-face communication , telepresence in virtual reality. in collaboration oculus / facebook, developed in 2015, first facial performance sensing head-mounted display, allows users transfer facial expressions onto digital avatars while being immersed in virtual environment. in same year, founded company pinscreen, inc. in santa monica, introduced technology can generate realistic 3d avatars of person including hair single photograph. innovation includes development of deep neural network can infer photorealistic facial textures low resolution still.
