the still undeveloped site @ corner of bredgade , dronningens tværgade in middle of 17th century owned pharmacist esaias fleischer. owner of løveapotek several properties in city. in 1670, few years after death, sold hans arenfeld, nobleman owner of knivholt manor @ frederikshavn.

the site later acquired count jean henri huguetan gyldensteen. constructed new building on land in 1740. gyldensten passed property on illegitimate son jean henri desmercières in 1749.

at turn of 19th century owned grocer peder erichsen. @ point privately owned building in copenhagen facade featured clock.

in 1937, property acquired restaurateur w. murdoch. converted hotel under name »stadt hamburg«.

in october 1945, few months after liberation, hotel phoenix acquired danish communist party. ole buhl , harald petersen commissioned adapted building new use party headquarters in 1946. party s newspaper land og folk , several other associated organisations , companies based in building.

arp-hansen acquired building in 1990. architect robert grünbreger refurbished hotel in 1990-1991.
