vera borea’s garments ingenious on both aesthetic , practical level.


for example, designer introduced high-waisted pants skimmed body below bust down waist, no belt necessary. lowered waistline down hips slimming line. showed pants bolero, bomber jackets, cropped sweaters or full blouses, enhanced elongated effect.

summer designs revealed in february 1933 marked milestone in borea s designing career. point no longer showed pants, exception of plus fours, styled boating. feminine sports frocks , evening gowns quite similar, except lengths. frocks shorter, sixteen inches off floor, while evening gowns ankle-length. both possessed accentuated sunburn decolletes, suspended small ribbon-threaded metal chains. borea lowered waistlines of creations hipbone. fashions began exaggerate fullness in overblouses , wide, flared, gored skirts designed. borea s bathing suits short , flaring, made plain wool or checked cotton. created taffeta blouses linen suits. spring , summer borea used knitted shoulder yokes. white suede golf jacket designed had knitted white cotton yoke. mixed wool motor , travel coats featured knitted wool yokes in dark tones. borea s cotton or linen dresses , jackets had yokes bright contrasts , belts of knitted wool.


1934

a novelty introduced in january 1934 skirted bathing suit. skirt worn on maillot or flaring one-piece shorts. separate skirt began outmode fuller covering given beach apron. borea s runner consisted of 2 flared panels opened on both sides. used large printed cotton handkerchief, popular in st. tropez. creativity showed in stylishness exhibited, working scarves new forms cover backless frocks. skirt 1 color, maillot another, , wraplet third. favored combinations dark blue, venetian pink, , pale yellow, or chinese blue, old rose, , beige.

in may 1935 copy of borea sundress sold $5.95 in los angeles store. made of cotton indianhead, dress left entire open soak in sun s warmth. featured block print natural background , design of green or purple lines. block print adorned turquoise, gold, , coral (color). sundress fashionable wear on bathing suit luncheon indoors @ beach club.


borea s collection fall 1935 included suits, jackets, , long redingotes, semi-fitted leg-o -mutton sleeves. fashions had widening shoulder line. sports suits uniquely cut in soft colored tweeds , worn dark crape shirts. short sleeves on these shirts widened. borea s day clothes featured number of shades of gray-green. these accentuated buttons , scarves of yellow or guardsman s red. bishop violet prominent color of borea s evening wear designs. nubby woolen, woven bear s hair, featured in designer s sports wear. wool daytime frocks had velvet belts , trimmings. highlights included pine-cone rosettes, replaced sports buttons. pheasant feathers exhibited trimming.


1936

in july borea released white flannel suit sea-cum-casino. worn chali blouse, had subtle differences suits introduced lucien lelong , other designers.


1938

borea silhouette characterized moulded bodices, normal shoulders, small waists, , short skirts, of them pleated , others flared. made use of linens beach, town, , evening wear. employed apronline, either draped or tied in back. other prominent features of note striped , embroidered materials (often oriental types), , colored piping (sewing). colorful printed frocks worn beneath slim, dark coats.


1939

for fall 1939 borea styled striped necktie wool dresses. daytime frocks worn necktie wool blouses , heavy leather belts. wool jackets shown plain skirts. full skirted dresses shirtwaist bodices part of evening wear. 1 design made in red , green vertical stripes. tucked in @ waist. evening gowns inspired portraits velasquez. features included long sleeves , gold buttons, modern shirtwaist effects.

1946

borea s 1946 fall collection presented on 12 september @ paris salon, had been redecorated white , red , massed red flowers. lines of clothing designs simple, natural shoulders. fullness eschewed except drapery featured on slim silhouette evening. among fashions @ showing included gray flannel ski suit white leather suspenders , gold buckles. borea introduced amber, mouse gray, , moss green corduroy box jackets on tweed suits or simple turtleneck wool dresses. town dresses , suits employed black wool bands or inset black velvet. perhaps attractive ensemble in collection mouse gray jacket plum frock.


1959

borea designed raincoat made golden brown proofed corduroy. buttons of embossed silver.
