kingdom hearts χ set before legendary keyblade war, conflict sparked on disputes between keyblade wielders on light created world, triggering calamity created world of kingdom hearts seen in first game in series. prior war, unnamed keyblade master bestows book called book of prophecies 5 of 6 apprentices before disappearing. book has ability predict , manifest objects , people future. 5 apprentices learn of prophecy foretelling world s destruction. in order prevent this, each of apprentices uses book manifest powerful warriors future fragments. each begins hoarding pieces of light, called lux, monsters known heartless, , each creates own union themed around individual animal icon: ursus, anguis, unicornus, leopardus, , vulpeus. player character, newly awakened keyblade wielder, chooses support 1 of unions , works ensure chosen faction s supremacy.
