the highway starts @ sprawling junction of ny 25 , i-495, four-lane divided highway. western split between ny 25 , cr 58 entirely grade-separated turnarounds in median. built in conjunction interchanges long island expressway @ exits 72 and 73. after incomplete interchange i-495 (which have been expanded when i-495 extended eastward), road narrows 4 lanes center-turn lane passes large tanger outlet center complex, built during 1990s.

continuing eastward, road alternates between 3 lanes , 4 lanes, center turn lane. portion of road between outlet center , traffic circle @ cr 73 has been site of active retail development, spread on several decades. such, road s width , treatment vary because task of widening largely fell each individual developer of new strip malls. of course, area congested, particularly because number of traffic lights on road has increased 6 in 1990 13 in 2007.

after traffic circle @ cr 73, road continues rest of length 2 lanes plus center-turn lane. terminates @ ny 25 , doctor s path northeast of town of riverhead.
