du pont 1 of first of many of family members attend massachusetts institute of technology. both younger brothers, irénée du pont (1897) , lammot du pont ii (1901), graduated mit. du pont, relations , dupont corporation generous benefactors on years, , helped set multiple endowments, fellowships, scholarships , faculty chairs university. when mit moved current location in cambridge in 1917, pierre, t. coleman du pont , charles hayden donated $215,000 house department of mining engineering , metallurgy (now department of materials science , engineering).

du pont served on multiple boards , committees, , 1916-1951 member of mit corporation, university s board of trustees. along brother lammot, given honor of being made life member emeritus when stepped down board in 1951.

in 2000, dupont mit alliance (dma) formed. on next 10 years, dupont corporation donated $55 million university fund many 20 different research projects.
