short began competitive career in 1982. first paralympic games 1988 seoul paralympics, won 2 gold medals in men s discus b3 , men s javelin b3 events, , bronze medal in men s shot put b3 event.

in 1988, became first disabled person receive scholarship australian institute of sport (ais). in 1990, while being coached ais throws coach merv kemp, broke discus b2 world record twice. competed in 1990 world championships , games disabled, assen, netherlands winning gold medals in men s shot put , discus b3 events.

in 1992 barcelona games, won 2 gold medals in men s discus b3 , men s shot put b3 events, received medal of order of australia, , bronze medal in men s javelin b3 event.

in 1996 atlanta games, won 2 silver medals in men s discus f12 , men s shot put f12 events. won 2 gold medals @ 2000 sydney games, setting world record in men s discus throw f12 event , paralympic games record in men s shot put f12 event. in 2004 athens games, won bronze medal in men s shot put f13 event , came fifth in men s discus f12 event. 6 weeks before winning bronze medal, had fallen off two-meter wall , broken arm.

short carried australian flag during opening ceremony of 2008 beijing games. @ games, came sixth in men s shot put f11/12 event. won silver medal in discus event @ 2011 ipc athletics world championships in christchurch, new zealand. in february 2011 interview shortly after championships, said: things starting fall apart, particularly shoulder, lot of changes way train , lot of physio, m confident ll right .

at 2012 london paralympics, short won bronze medal in men s shot put f11/12 event. @ 2016 rio paralympics, finished seventh in men s shot put f12.

in april 2017, short awarded athletics australia edwin flack award 2016.

at 2017 world para athletics championships in london, england, 8 championship, finished fifth in men s shot put f12 throw of 14.29 m , seventh in men s discus f12 throw of 39.31  m.
