religion

the population of gaza overwhelmingly composed of muslims, follow sunni islam. during fatimid period, shia islam dominant in gaza, after saladin conquered city in 1187, promoted strictly sunni religious , educational policy, @ time instrumental in uniting arab , turkish soldiers.


gaza home small palestinian christian minority of 3,500 people. majority live in zaytun quarter of old city , belong greek orthodox, roman catholic, , baptist denominations. in 1906 there 750 christians, of 700 orthodox , 50 roman catholic.


gaza s jewish community 3,000 years old, , in 1481 there sixty jewish households. of them fled gaza after 1929 palestine riots, when consisted of fifty families. in sami hadawi s land , population survey, gaza had population of 34,250, including 80 jews in 1945. of them left city after 1948 war, due mutual distrust between them , arab majority. today, there no jews living in gaza.
