karma , karmaphala fundamental concepts in buddhism. concepts of karma , karmaphala explain how our intentional actions keep tied rebirth in samsara, whereas buddhist path, exemplified in noble eightfold path, shows way out of samsara. karmaphala fruit , effect or result of karma. similar term karmavipaka, maturation or cooking of karma. cycle of rebirth determined karma, literally action . in buddhist tradition, karma refers actions driven intention (cetanā), deed done deliberately through body, speech or mind, leads future consequences. nibbedhika sutta, anguttara nikaya 6.63:



intention (cetana) tell you, kamma. intending, 1 kamma way of body, speech, & intellect.



how these intentional actions lead rebirth, , how idea of rebirth reconciled doctrines of impermanence , no-self, matter of philosophical inquiry in buddhist traditions, several solutions have been proposed. in buddhism no explicit theory of rebirth , karma worked out, , karma doctrine may have been incidental buddhist soteriology. in buddhism, rebirth ascribed craving or ignorance. buddha s teaching of karma not strictly deterministic, incorporated circumstantial factors, unlike of jains. not rigid , mechanical process, flexible, fluid , dynamic process. there no set linear relationship between particular action , results. karmic effect of deed not determined solely deed itself, nature of person commits deed, , circumstances in committed. karmaphala not judgement enforced god, deity or other supernatural being controls affairs of cosmos. rather, karmaphala outcome of natural process of cause , effect.


within buddhism, real importance of doctrine of karma , fruits lies in recognition of urgency put stop whole process. acintita sutta warns results of kamma 1 of 4 incomprehensible subjects, subjects beyond conceptualization , cannot understood logical thought or reason.
