the flag of queens contains 3 horizontal bands, top , bottom being sky blue, , middle white. these colors represent arms of first dutch governor willem kieft. @ center design consisting of ring of wampum, tulip, , rose. @ top-left of flag crown, words qveens borovgh emblazoned in gold, , 1898, year 5 boroughs consolidated.


the symbols on flag s design represent borough s collective heritage wampum paying homage lenape natives formerly called land seawanhaka (a word meaning island of sea shells ) in reference being place collect clams , whelks used make these beads. tulip shown on flag represents dutch, settlers of area. red , white rose tudor rose, traditional symbol of england , english monarchy. queen s crown signifies namesake of borough, named in honor of catherine of braganza, queen consort of england in 1683, when new york s original twelve counties (of queens one) established.


the queens flag adopted on june 3, 1913, , first displayed 4 days later @ celebration marking beginning of construction on borough s dual rapid transit system.
