Austria High-speed rail in Europe



the western railway between capital vienna , salzburg being upgraded. new sections have continuous maximum design speed of 250 km/h. german , austrian ice trains operate @ maximum speed of 230 km/h, austrian locomotive-hauled trains (called railjet) launched in 2008.


the 56 km (35 mi) brenner base tunnel under construction allow speeds of 250 km/h. first part of new lower inn valley railway opened in december 2012 part of upgrade of line connecting future brenner base tunnel , southern germany, being upgraded 2 tracks 4 , maximum design speed of 250 km/h. section part of berlin–palermo railway axis.


the koralm railway, first entirely new railway line in second austrian republic has been under construction since 2006. includes new 33 km tunnel (the koralm tunnel) connecting cities of klagenfurt , graz. built intermodal freight transport, used passenger trains travelling @ 250 km/h. time taken travel klagenfurt graz reduced 3 hours 1 hour. koralmbahn expected operational 2023.
