in 2014, scientists university of philippines (diliman campus) - institute of biology in partnership university of kansas have discovered distinct genus of philippine tarsier. genetically distinct populations found in dinagat islands, surigao del norte, , siargao islands in mindanao island s northeast portion. isolation key population s distinctiveness. prior study, scientists accepted 3 subspecies of philippine tarsier: large island of mindanao contained 1 subspecies, tarsius syrichta carbonarius; while islands of samar , leyte sported another, tarsius syrichta syrichta; , bohol held third, tarsius syrichta fraterculus. new genetic research found relationships among philippine tarsier populations messier. looking @ mitochondrial , nuclear dna, brown s team uncovered 3 different evolutionary lineages: 1 lineage of tarsier makes home on bohol, samar, , leyte islands (putting 2 presently accepted philippine tarsier subspecies single subspecies); has conquered vast majority of mindanao; while long-cryptic branch has evolved in northeastern mindanao , dinagat island (the new subspecies). purposes of paper, scientists refer dinagat-caraga tarsier. rafe brown of university of kansas biodiversity institute, author of study, said through more keen study, current philippine tarsier species, carlito syrichta, split 3 distinct full species in future.
