led captain protet, french troops took possession of senegalese coast in 1857. work began on port in 1862 , inaugurated in 1866.

in late 1880s great depression in 1930s (thought did not affected inland in senegal), ship traffic volume high, used refueling station ships coal, military ones, start of 20th century, of ships french, other ships came there. ship volume higher port of mindelo (see porto grande bay) in portuguese cape verde, closest other major port @ time , active port of las palmas de gran canaria. coal refueling dropped when diesel ships rose , late 1950s, ships refueled diesel.
