history
foundation of street

borgergade originates in 1649 plan new copenhagen, large area included in fortified city when old east rampart along present day gothersgade decommissioned , new 1 built in more northerly direction. according plan, streets in area named after danish territorial possessions, royalty , upper classes. new district spaciously planned long straight streets. affluent families settled along bredgade , ny kongensgade while area around borgergade , adelgade catered more modest clientel, typically craftsmen , shop-keepers. buildings half-timbered , relatively small, , living conditions still considerably better in crowded city centre.


escaping disaster

the neighbourhood escaped both great fires of 1728 , 1795, , left largely unharmed british bombardment of city during battle of copenhagen in 1807.


one of finest buildings in street mint master s house. had been built in 1683 royal mint master gregorius sessemann private residence , inhabited successive mint masters until 1752. in 1720 house fitted fine baroque staircase. separate apartment created rented russian ambassador in 1728. in 1760s house extended , adapted once again, reaching finest state. in 1767, acquired master mason lived there until 1803.

while borgergade escaped direct effects fires , war, still have deep impact on street. many people had been left homeless , ruined disasters moved there in search of affordable accommodation, making increasingly crowded. gardens , courtyards built on , floors added on top of existing buildings make room many new residents.


on 26 january 1865, first public bath house opened in street after donation carl joachim hambro, banker residing in london, apart sanitation facilities sparse.


when fortifications decommissioned in middle of century, many of owners moved on new residential districts had sprung up, such nørrebro , vesterbro, , area around borgergade developed 1 of worst , crowded slums in city notorious reputation poverty, vice , crime.

in end, decided condemn area. clearing began in 1940s put on hold in 1943 due war. after liberation, work resumed , area built modern buildings in late 1940s , 50s. 2 smaller streets, prinsessegade , helsingørgade, ceased exist.

instigated christian axel jensen, director of museum of copenhagen, mint master s house dismantled, registered , stored in shed @ vestre cemetery. plan re-build @ later date part of open-air museum dedicated urban architecture complement rural buildings @ lyngby open air museum never materialised. in 1995, old town in aarhus took on materials , house reconstructed in 2009.
