a hundred years before spaniards arrived in philippines, settlement became tagbilaran involved in trading china , malaya. settlement had contact spaniards in 1565, when spanish conquistador miguel lópez de legazpi , native chieftain datu sikatuna pledged peace , cooperation through famous blood compact.

(san jose de) tagbilaran established town on 9 february 1742, general don francisco antonio calderón de la barca, governor of visayas, separated town of baclayon. town dedicated st. joseph worker. since part of province of bohol until became chartered city on 1 july 1966, virtue of republic act no. 4660.

the city occupied united states during philippine-american war , imperial japan during world war ii.

sitio ubos (lower town) tagbilaran s former harbor site , considered city s oldest portion, having been busy trading center since seventeenth century until twentieth century. such, place houses oldest , largest number of heritage houses in bohol. sitio ubos declined major port towards end of spanish era when causeway panglao island constructed. since then, area lost former glory , old houses either demolished or neglected.

in 2002, in recognition of cultural , historic significance, sitio ubos declared cultural heritage area . of surviving heritage houses day include rocha–suarez house, rocha house, hontanosas house, beldia house, , yap house.

historic events

one of important events in philippine history (immortalized on canvas famous filipino painter juan luna) blood compact between datu sikatuna, local native chieftain, , captain miguel lópez de legazpi, spanish explorer , colonizer. took place in coast of bool, district of tagbilaran, on 16 march 1565, day after legazpi , crew of conquistadores on 4 ships chanced upon shores of bool during trip province of butuan camiguin island because of strong southwest monsoon winds , low tide.

on day, 16 march 1565, legazpi fray andres de urdaneta , of crew set foot on land audience local chieftain sikatuna. 2 bands of different race , creed met few hundred meters beach and, after few pleasantries, basque seafarer , chieftain of bohol sealed , strengthened treaty of friendship in historic blood compact. sikatuna , legazpi each made cut on left arm , collected drop of blood single vessel mixed wine. marker stands on spot sikatuna , legaspi allegedly sealed famous compact. honor treaty of friendship, president elpidio quirino established order of sikatuna in 1953, presidential award , decoration conferred upon visiting dignitaries.

during japanese occupation, municipal government of tagbilaran, mayor @ time manuel espuelas, moved poblacion tiptip. significant event battle of ubujan wherein guerrilla unit under command of captain francisco salazar (aka vicente cubello) engaged japanese troops against overwhelming odds.

2013 earthquake

an earthquake magnitude 7.2, epicenter near sagbayan, bohol, struck bohol on 15 october 2013. tagbilaran received 4 fatalities , 21 injuries, , damage buildings, including seaport, airport, , city hall.
