christianity has been present in town since @ least 7th century, when bede mentioned monastery in gateshead. church in town burned down in 1080 bishop of durham inside. st mary s church built near site of building, , church in town until 1820s. undoubtedly oldest building on quayside, st mary s has re-opened public town s first heritage centre.

many of anglican churches in town date 19th century, when population of town grew dramatically , expanded new areas. town presently has number of notable , large churches of many denominations.
