turkish hsr network: high-speed rail lines in service, under construction, , in planning stages



turkey started building high-speed rail lines in 2003 aiming double-track high-speed rail network through country allowing maximum speed of 250 km/h. planned line between İstanbul, edirne , kapıkule situated in european part of country.


the first line built aimed connect İstanbul ankara (via eskişehir) reducing travel time 6 – 7 hours 3 hours 10 minutes. eskişehir-ankara line started operating regular services on 14 march 2009 maximum speed of 250 km/h, being first high speed rail service in turkey making turkish state railways 6th european national rail company offer hsr services (although these situated in asian part of country). eskişehir-İstanbul line still under construction , due in 2015.


the ankara - konya line construction began in 2006. travel time projected decreased 70 minutes on route. construction of ankara - kırıkkale - yozgat - sivas line began in february 2009. several other hsr line projects between major cities such ankara - afyon - uşak - İzmir, İstanbul - bursa, İstanbul - edirne - kapıkule (bulgarian border) have reached final design , expected pass contraction phase soon. ankara - kayseri , eskişehir - afyon - antalya lines planned built in coming years. konya - mersin - adana , sivas - erzincan - erzurum - kars lines mentioned prime minister , minister of transport.


the first 12 high-speed trainsets ordered caf company, spain. further sets expected provided siemens.



greece

development of modern rail network greece has been major goal since 1990s. in 1996, construction of known p.a.th.e./p. given go-ahead. line, should have opened 2004, link patras, athens, thessaloniki , greece–republic of macedonia , greece–bulgaria borders in idomeni , promachonas respectively. project faced lack of funding , construction difficulties. although sections have opened, line not operational before 2018.



hungary , romania

the 2 countries have agreed in november 2007 build high-speed line between capital cities budapest , bucharest part of larger transportation corridor paris-vienna-budapest-bucharest-constanța. there no clear schedule project yet, feasibility studies, ecological impact studies , right-of-way land purchase should not begin before 2009. link designed support speeds 300 km/h, no technical details have been made public of march 2008. @ moment railway bucharest constanța support speeds 160 km/h. plan high-speed railway through budapest-arad-sibiu-brașov-bucharest-constanța officially included in revised ten-t plan in october 2013 part of rhine-danube corridor. works planned carried out between 2017 , 2025.


hungary , serbia

there ongoing negotiations between 2 countries , china build high-speed line between capital cities budapest , belgrade, part of larger corridor budapest-belgrade-niš-skopje-thessaloniki-athens. expected upgrade current railway line budapest-belgrade 200 km/h. works planned start late 2015 or 2016, , last 2 years.
