the civil airport administration stated in 1950 tromsø, northern norway s largest town, should have airfield. parliament s standing committee on transport , communications decided in 1953 new airport should built @ langnes. local politicians feared bardufoss remain permanent solution troms. meeting in chamber of commerce on 27 january 1955 resulted in committee being established lobby airfield. followed municipality borrowing 350,000 norwegian krone expropriate area. initial plans langnes 1,400-meter (4,600 ft) runway; not allow largest aircraft land. local politicians therefore started lobbying national politicians 1,600 meters (5,200 ft). after had been passed, new lobby campaign established 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) runway, chosen.

parliament approved airport , necessary funding in 1962 , construction started following year selmer contractor. decided runway measure 2,160 40 meters (7,090 130 ft), including overruns @ each end. allowed sas operate new sud aviation caravelles tromsø. airport officially opened on 14 september 1964.
