lds temple construction reached all-time high in 2000. of march 2016, there 150 operating temples.


the first latter-day saint temple ceremonies performed in kirtland, ohio, differed endowment performed on second floor of joseph smith s red brick store in nauvoo, illinois, , nauvoo temple. kirtland ordinances included washings , anointings (differing in many ways modern portion) , washing of feet ordinance. 4 years, beginning in 1842, smith s red brick store functioned de facto temple—the site of first washings, anointings, endowments, , sealings. in contrast, grand edifice known nauvoo temple in operation 2 months before latter day saints left illinois west.

upon reaching great basin, brigham young began build settlements based on city of zion plan , designated 4 of these contain temples: salt lake city (1847), st. george (1871), manti (1875), , logan (1877). st. george temple first completed in 1877, followed logan (1884) , manti (1888). salt lake temple took 40 years complete because of various setbacks , delays. dedicated in 1893.


latter-day saint temple building halted until presidency of joseph f. smith, announced 2 additional temples: cardston, alberta (1913), , lāʻie, hawaiʻi (1915). cardston became first latter-day saint temple dedicated outside of united states. smith broke previous tradition (established since kirtland) of building temples upper , lower courts. temples had been ever larger, laie hawaii temple smaller nauvoo temple had been.


both cardston , laie dedicated under church president heber j. grant, temple in mesa, arizona. george albert smith dedicated next temple in idaho falls, idaho. david o. mckay dedicated 5 additional temples including 1 in bern, switzerland—which first temple dedicated in europe , first temple use film recording of endowment rather live actors. joseph fielding smith dedicated temple in ogden, utah , harold b. lee dedicated twin in provo, utah.

under church president gordon b. hinckley, church dedicated 77 temples. in 1997, hinckley introduced standardized, smaller temple plan designed bring temple services smaller or remote congregations @ reduced cost. first of new generation of temples completed in 1998 monticello utah temple. original plan called 6,800 square feet (630 m), later increased 10,700 square feet (990 m). subsequent revisions standard design further increased size , complexity of temples. majority of temples dedicated under hinckley s tenure of smaller design, 1 particularly noteworthy achievement rebuilding of temple in nauvoo, illinois, known nauvoo illinois temple.


as of april 2016, 26 temples have been dedicated under current church president thomas s. monson. there 158 operating temples (which includes 7 dedicated, closed renovation), 12 under construction, , 12 announced (not yet under construction).
