as of 2017, canon has released no fewer 70 eos slr , dslr camera models, starting introduction of eos 650 in 1987. in 1990s, canon worked kodak produce digital camera bodies, starting eos dcs 3 in 1995. first digital eos slr camera wholly designed , manufactured canon eos d30, released in 2000.

canon sold 2 eos cameras designed use aps film format, eos ix , eos ix lite.

canon sold manual-focus camera, canon ef-m, used same ef lens mount eos cameras. came automatic , manual exposure functions lacked autofocus. came equipped split-screen/microprism focusing screen precise manual focusing.

eye-controlled focusing

through tracking of eyeball movements, eos cameras equipped eye-controlled focusing (ecf) (some identifiable suffix e) able select desired autofocus point in scene, based on user looking in viewfinder frame. ecf useful in sports photography subject may shift position in frame rapidly.

eos cameras equipped ecf eos a2e (u.s. model names shown; see table below equivalents in other countries), eos elan iie, eos ixe, eos-3, eos elan 7e, , eos elan 7ne.

canon did not continue use of eye-controlled focusing in digital slrs. eos elan 7ne last eos camera have function.

most prosumer , professional level eos cameras feature large quick control dial (qcd) on camera back. first consumer-level eos camera feature eos 760d/rebel t6s, announced in february 2015. feature allows easy adjustment of parameters using thumb, qcd used quick access often-used functions otherwise require more complicated procedure of button-presses , dial-clicks.

cameras equipped qcd can operated 1 hand (forefinger on main dial, thumb on qcd) without taking eye off viewfinder.

some useful functions qcd programmed include setting exposure compensation, setting of aperture in manual exposure mode , scrolling of images , menus in digital eos cameras.

multi-point autofocus system

currently, top-line eos cameras have either 61 or 65 user-selectable autofocus (af) points, in class. although 2 nikon models introduced in 2016, d5 , d500, have 153 af points, 55 of these points user-selectable. following eos cameras feature such system, 61 points unless otherwise indicated:

the eos 5d mark iii, introduced in march 2012.
the eos-1d x, announced in october 2011 , scheduled sale in april 2012, delayed until june 2012. since replaced mark ii version.
the eos 7d mark ii, on sale since november 2014. aps-c body has canon s first (and far only) 65-point af system.
the eos 5ds , 5ds r, 2 closely related higher-resolution full-frame bodies otherwise similar 5d mkiii, announced in february 2015 sales beginning in june of year.
the eos-1d x mark ii, replacement original 1d x, announced in february 2016 sales expected begin in april of year.
the eos 5d mark iv, announced in august 2016 replacement 5d mk iii.

the release of 5d mkiii gave canon lead once again in category; previously, top-line cameras had 45 af points, led industry until nikon released d3 , d300 dslrs 51-point af systems.

a higher number of af points increases chances of sharply-focused photograph in situations subject travels across frame @ high speeds (e.g. sports, wildlife).

having many af points helps relieve photographer having use lock focus , recompose method of framing photograph can introduce focusing inaccuracy. camera focuses on closest object or on human faces, may not photographer wants, eos cameras equipped multi-point af system still allow photographer manually select af point.

the eos-3, eos-1v, eos-1d models prior eos-1d x, eos 80d, eos 77d, , eos 800d/rebel t7i feature 45-point af system. canon dslrs introduced since late 2005, starting eos 20d , rebel xti (400d), feature nine-point af system in diamond-shape formation. eos 5d, released in 2005, takes 9-point af system step further introducing 6 more invisible af points (i.e. not user-selectable) in helping camera acquire focus faster during subject tracking. there have been several exceptions canon s recent rule of 9-point af system. eos 1000d (rebel xs) has 7-point af system of older canon dslrs. eos 7d, released in 2009, has 19-point af layout, fitting within same diamond-shaped area of frame nine-point layout. eos 70d, released in august 2013, inherited 7d s 19-point layout, fewer af control options. 70d system in turn handed down eos 750d (rebel t6i) , 760d (rebel t6s), announced in february 2015. mentioned above, eos 5d mark iii, eos-1d x, eos 5ds/5ds r, , eos-1d x mark ii have 61-point af layouts. eos 6d, released in october 2012, has 11-point layout. eos 80d, announced in 2016, marked return of 45-point af systems canon eos line, first appearance of 45-point system in non-professional body. system brought downmarket in 2017 inclusion in upper-entry-level eos 77d , mid-entry-level eos 800d/rebel t7i.

for earlier generation of 45-point af system, central column of 1 or 2 sensors (7 in eos-1ds mk ii, eos-1d mk ii n) cross-type sensors, sensitive both vertical , horizontal lines offer high degree of accuracy. eos-1ds mk iii, replaced eos-1d x, has 19 cross-type sensors higher accuracy, placing cross-type sensors complement rule of thirds. other canon professional slr replaced eos-1d x, aps-h eos-1d mk iv, has 39 cross-type sensors, major increase 19 of mk iii. of 61 af points of eos-1d x , 5d mkiii, 21 central points , 20 outer points cross-type, , 5 central points dual-cross-type (sensitive diagonal lines in addition horizontal , vertical). 65 points of 7d mkii cross-type, center point dual-cross-type.

prior introduction of eos d30 digital slr, kodak produced 4 digital slrs sold under canon brand. these cameras used digital camera image sensor , associated electronics designed , built kodak modified internals of eos-1n film slr. due using canon eos body, these 4 digital slrs can accept ef lenses. 4 cameras were:

after termination of agreement canon, kodak cooperated sigma – @ time had canon license – produce kodak dcs pro slr/c based on sa9 slr body in 2004, compatible ef lenses.

the following digital slrs, starting d30, had bodies , sensors designed , manufactured canon (except canon eos-1d, uses panasonic sourced ccd sensor).
