the nintendo 2ds (abbreviated 2ds) announced on august 28, 2013, new entry-level model of nintendo 3ds family. while hardware , software relatively similar nintendo 3ds (and still offers compatibility nintendo ds , 3ds games), lacks 3ds s signature 3d screen, not have internal stereo speakers (only using mono speaker), , uses slate-like form factor opposed clamshell design used nintendo ds , 3ds predecessors. nintendo 2ds released in north america , europe on october 12, 2013, coinciding launch of pokémon x & y , being sold alongside nintendo 3ds , 3ds xl @ relatively lower price point.


as cheaper model of nintendo 3ds family, still plays nintendo ds , 3ds games, nintendo 2ds seen market strategy broaden overall nintendo handheld gaming market. such, 2ds handheld console targeted @ different audience of regular nintendo 3ds models, particularly younger users. despite concerns critics felt company trying de-emphasize 3d functionality releasing 2ds, nintendo maintains 3d still part of future plans.
