in 1757, in midst of french , indian war, 3 french divisions , huron indian allies advancing on fort william henry, british stronghold south of lake george in colony of new york. chingachgook (theodore lorch) sends son uncas (roscoe), last living warrior of mohican tribe, warn fort s commander, colonel munro (james gordon), of imminent danger. uncas admired munro s daughter cora (barbara bedford), displeasure of suitor, captain randolph (george hackathorne).

munro dispatches major heyward (henry woodward) , indian runner named magua (beery) escort cora , capricious younger sister alice (hall) relative safety of fort edward, , deliver urgent request reinforcements commander, general webb (sydney deane). magua, huron sympathizer ulterior motives, convinces heyward take shortcut through forest, pretends lose way. in forest encounter uncas, chingachgook , hunter , scout hawkeye (harry lorraine), accompanied eccentric preacher named david gamut (nelson mcdowell). when heyward asks directions fort edward, men become suspicious of magua who, indians in area, should have intimate knowledge of terrain. fears of treachery confirmed when discover magua has disappeared.
