although in years of statehood alaska democratic state, since 1970s has been characterized republican-leaning. local political communities have worked on issues related land use development, fishing, tourism, , individual rights. alaska natives, while organized in , around communities, have been active within native corporations. these have been given ownership on large tracts of land, require stewardship.
