biography
early life

fukuhara born in seattle, washington in 1920. father died in 1933, , mother took family native japan before war. in 1938, following graduation high-school in japan, harry returned united states.

military career

after enlisting in army gila river internment camp in 1942, fukuhara served in army in pacific linguist 33rd infantry division. served in new guinea , philippine campaigns, earning battlefield commission. toward end of war part of force preparing invade kyushu, japan. unknown him, preparing assault of japan, had brother drafted in japanese army preparing kyushu s defense. following conclusion of war sent japanese prisoner camps had tell them of bombing , emperor s surrender. month following surrender of japan during beginning of occupation secured authorization mother , 3 brothers in hiroshima. found them, suffering effects of radiation bomb, , after trying older brother american military hospital, succumbed radiation poisoning, mother , 2 younger brothers survived.

following world war ii, fukuhara temporarily returned united states before returned army serve in army s occupation , reconstruction of japan. understanding of language, culture, , tireless efforts instrumental in developing post world war ii united states - japanese relations. ended distinguished career in uniform in 1971 military governor of yaeyama islands group in ryukyu islands. several of military decorations include legion of merit, , bronze star.

later life

following military career, fukuhara served in federal service, again retiring in 1991. among many decorations , citations, earned distinguished federal civilian service medal president of united states. inducted in military intelligence hall of fame in 1988 , made distinguished member. resided in san jose, california , attended mi hall of fame induction ceremonies when able.

fukuhara died in honolulu, hawaii on april 8, 2015.
