gerard appointed lord chancellor of england in 1085, , present @ william s deathbed in 1087. continued chancellor william rufus until 1092; precipitated loss of office unclear. retained king s trust, rufus employed him in 1095 along william warelwast on diplomatic mission pope urban ii regarding archbishop anselm receiving pallium, sign of archbishop s authority. rufus offered recognise urban pope rather antipope clement iii in return anselm s deposition , delivery of anselm s pallium rufus custody, dispose of saw fit. mission departed rome in february 1095 , returned whitsun papal legate, walter cardinal bishop of albano, had anselm s pallium. legate secured rufus recognition of urban, subsequently refused consider anselm s deposition. rufus resigned himself anselm s position archbishop, , @ king s court @ windsor consented anselm being given pallium.

although not yet ordained, gerard rewarded bishopric of hereford, , consecrated archbishop anselm on 8 june 1096; ordination deacon , priest had taken place previous day. assisted @ consecration of st paul s cathedral in london on 9 june 1096. may have been member of hunting party in new forest on 2 august 1100 when rufus killed, witnessed king henry s coronation charter – known charter of liberties – 3 days later @ winchester, close new forest. gerard present @ henry s coronation same day, along maurice, bishop of london. henry crowned maurice, medieval chronicler walter map states gerard crowned henry in return promise of first vacant archbishopric. gerard may have assisted maurice in coronation ceremony.
