rutherford played rickenbacker , shergold basses. developed idea behind m-series steinberger guitar of english luthier roger giffin , used extensively in 1980s , during invisible touch tour genesis. had double-neck status built mama , invisible touch tours featured 6 string guitar , 4 string bass placed in custom body. in earlier years of genesis played dewtron mister bassman and, starting in 1976, moog taurus bass pedal synthesisers.

through 1970s live tours, rutherford used custom built rickenbacker double-neck combined 12-string semi-hollow-body guitar 4-string bass (now on display @ rock , roll hall of fame museum). lamb lies down on broadway , first part of trick of tail tours, incorporated rickenbacker 12-string solid-body guitar , 6-string micro-frets signature baritone, equipped 6-string short scale bass strings. later switched 12-string solid body/6-string bass combination built scratch. these double-neck guitars made luthier dick knight. custom shergold double-neck made had modules 4, 6 , 12 strings guitars. retunings required genesis songs led development of peter gabriel s stories , introductions.

for 2007 tour genesis, rutherford continued use double-neck instruments when arrangements demand quick switches between bass , twelve-string guitars. current double-neck model gibson twelve-string guitar yamaha trb-4p bass while prefers eric clapton signature model fender stratocasters when playing guitar on later pieces.
