in australia, smoking bans determined on state-by-state basis. in chronological order state:

south australia: smoking prohibited in indoor dining areas since january 1999. banned in enclosed public places since november 2007.
western australia: incremental restrictions introduced january 2005 comprehensive total restriction upon smoking in enclosed public spaces taking effect july 2006.
tasmania: total indoor smoking ban in force since january 2006. january 2008 regulations extended include smoking in cars passengers under age of 18.
queensland: comprehensive smoking ban in effect since july 2006. smoking prohibited in pubs, clubs, restaurants , workplaces, commercial outdoor eating , drinking areas, outdoor public places, , within 4 metres of non-residential building entrances.
australian capital territory: restriction upon smoking in enclosed public places has been in effect since december 2006.
victoria: restriction upon smoking in enclosed public places has been in effect since july 2007. offence smoke in vehicle there person under age of 18 present, since january 2010. smoking still permitted in drinking areas providing 25% outdoors , meals not being served. private cigar bars , rooms of crown casino still permitted smoking in enclosed areas providing has proper ventilation system.
new south wales: restriction upon smoking in enclosed areas of restaurants, licensed clubs , pubs came force in july 2007. 1 july 2009, smoking in car child under age of 16 against law. public health (tobacco) act 2008 creates new offence of smoking in car child under 16 years of age in vehicle. $250 on-the-spot fine applies driver , passenger breaks law. enforced nsw police.
northern territory: restrictions upon smoking in enclosed areas of restaurants, licensed clubs , pubs came force on 2 january 2010.
norfolk island: smoking banned in government buildings, tour buses, taxis , flights , island. there no law on smoking in restaurants many smokefree, however, have dedicated smoking room people wish smoke. smoking permitted in bars , licensed premises. resorts , motels have smoking rooms , areas smokers.
