on 1 june 1770, papal bull issued pope clement xiv, diocese of penafiel established, separating ecclesiastical diocese of porto, apparently suffragan of metropolitan archdiocese of braga. rather pastral reasons, creation of see inspired wish of king s de facto reigning prime minister, marquess of pombal, punish bishopof porto depriving him of of diocese- whole comarca di penafiel (administrative district), comprising 102 parishes, in ferguesias (suburbs) of great (o)porto port city.
