one of earlier arde developments 7.62 mm 1a1 self-loading rifle (slr) , ammunition replaced ishapore 2a1 bolt-action rifles (based on 0.303 lee–enfield rifle) in indian army service then. on million rifles have been produced ishapore rifle factory, , used in 1965 , 1971 indo-pakistan wars.

drawing heavily past experience 7.62mm slr, arde developed 5.56 mm indian small arms system (insas). helped standardize ammunition infantry, reducing logistical problems. infantry earlier equipped 3 types of small arms firing 2 types of ammunition, viz. 7.62 mm ishapore slr, lmg , 9 mm carbine. insas family replaces 3 weapons, , consists of assault rifle, light machine gun, , carbine variant. insas introduced in 1998, , has since supplanted slr service rifle of indian army.

the single shot arde 40 mm under barrel grenade launcher developed in collaboration ordnance factory tiruchirappalli use insas , ak-47 rifles. stand alone versions of grenade launcher exist. ubgl has in-built safety prevent accidental firing , 3-point attachment rigidity. trigger system is, located on side of barrel, allowing soldier fire both rifle , grenade launcher without having change firing posture. weapon uses simple ladder sight mechanism , has tritium illuminated sights night firing. ammunition fired ubgl, similar milkor mgl used indian army, allowing standardisation.
