after esma left academy of music in belgrade (sr serbia), joined ansambl teodosievski , started touring. in 1961, ansambl went zagreb (sr croatia) record redžepova s first disc. released jugoton , included bre babi chaje shukarije, song redžepova wrote herself. song in romani became huge success in yugoslavia.


the 1960s , 1970s extremely successful couple. recorded many albums , eps, , took part radio , television shows. of songs performed esma redžepova @ time traditional romani songs or songs inspired romani music. however, of them had noticeable western influence. makedo inspired cha-cha, kod kodak shows heavy pop influences, , pesma Šeher sarajevu , makes use of psychedelic organs. redžepova performed many songs related ethnic macedonian music no tie romani music. of these songs duets recorded macedonian singers, such blagujno dejče , biljana platno beleše , zašto si me majko rodila .

at end of 1960s, esma , stevo founded music school trained young disadvantaged boys, romani. of musicians in ansambl teodosievski trained in school , of them achieved fame. in total, 48 boys attended school.


by encouraging other macedonian roma musicians, esma , stevo built circle around them. among prominent members singers muharem serbezovski, usnija jašarova , enver rasimov, , clarinetist medo Čun.

during 1980s, musical career of esma redžepova slowed down. in 1989, settled in skopje husband. after independence in 1991, republic of macedonia went through difficult times. stevo teodosievski died in 1997 @ 72. however, esma redžepova toured united states year after, performing @ series of benefit concerts. released selection of duets usnija jašarova in 1994.


the 2000s fruitful , marked slight shift in singer s career. in macedonia , former yugoslavia, esma gained more modern image , redefined herself worldbeat artist. instance, made several collaborations young pop singers. in 2002, recorded song croatian band magazin , duet macedonian singer todor proeski. recorded song bosnian band crno vino in 2005 , made collaboration kiril džajkovski in 2010. on international scene, esma redžepova contributed towards establishment of roma music non-mass-market good, pleasing urban , cultural elite. however, many of new songs not accepted western audience because did not match expectation roma music. instance, songs featured synthesizer, instrument not used in traditional roma music. esma booed @ concert in spain, defended herself saying roma music has adapted , borrowed external features.

esma redžepova died on morning of 11 december 2016 in skopje after illness, 73. had been taken hospital on 28 november, , in critical condition. funeral ceremony took place on 12 december @ skopje city council, several officials, including mayor of city , macedonian president, gjorge ivanov, paid homage her. later buried @ butel cemetery.
