the second redditch station in 1900s

in 1868 evesham , redditch railway built line south redditch through evesham junction @ ashchurch. there intermediate stations between redditch , evesham @ studley , astwood bank, coughton, alcester, wixford, broom junction (for stratford-upon-avon , midland junction railway), salford priors, , harvington.

british railways (br) closed line south of alcester on 29 september 1962 after suspending passenger service between redditch , evesham due poor track condition. freight services continued between redditch , alcester until 1964 when br closed whole line south of redditch. remaining line redditch barnt green closed under beeching axe, have severed town railway network entirely. strong campaign local residents , local mps managed save it. however, late 1960s, services redditch had been cut bare minimum 4 daily trains , birmingham. persisted until 1980, when hourly service extended redditch on newly upgraded cross-city line. upgraded half-hourly in 1989.

the station has been relocated 3 times, on 4 may 1868, 7 february 1972 , 5 october 1992. movement of station give way redevelopment in town centre , building of new bus station. recent rebuilding of station in 1992 coincided electrification of cross-city line. first station in clive road when original redditch railway opened in 1859. station moved site bus station when railway extended evesham in 1868.

some of former goods yard on pound meadow car park current station of yard has been redeveloped housing , hotel.

the single track barnt green, restricted number of trains run redditch 2 per hour. in november 2013 scheme approved construct new passing loop @ alvechurch allow service increased 3 trains per hour. line between barnt green , redditch closed 8 weeks works carried out, , reopened on 1 september 2014. improved service began in december 2014.
