bengali has many 100,000 separate words, of 50,000 considered tadbhavas, 21,100 tatsamas , remainder loanwords austroasiatic , other foreign languages.


however, these figures not take account large proportion of archaic or highly technical words, used. furthermore, different dialects use more persian , arabic vocabulary in different areas of bangladesh , muslim majority areas of west bengal hindus use more sanskrit vocabulary muslims , while standard bengali based on nadia dialect of spoken in hindu majority states of west bengal, 90% of bengalis in bangladesh ( approx 148 million muslim) , 27% of bengalis in west bengal , 10% in assam (together 36 million muslims) muslim , speak more persio-arabised version of bengali instead of more sanskrit influenced standard nadia dialect. productive vocabulary used in modern literary works, in fact, made (67%) of tadbhavas, while tatsamas comprise 25% of total. loanwords non-indic languages comprise remaining 8% of vocabulary used in modern bengali literature.


because of centuries of contact europeans, turkic peoples, , persians, bengali language has absorbed numerous words foreign languages, totally integrating these borrowings core vocabulary.


the common borrowings foreign languages come 3 different kinds of contact. after close contact several indigenous austroasiatic languages,[1] , later mughal invasion court language persian, numerous chagatai, arabic, , persian words absorbed lexicon.


later, east asian travelers , lately european colonialism brought words portuguese, french, dutch, , english during colonial period.
