from 1949 1950, nationalists began prepare armed revolution. revolution take place in 1952, on date united states congress approve creation of political status of free associated state (estado libre associado) puerto rico.


albizu campos called armed revolution because considered new political status colonial farce. campos picked town of jayuya headquarters of revolution because of location, , weapons stored in home of blanca canales.

on october 26, 1950, albizu campos holding meeting in fajardo when received word house in san juan surrounded police waiting arrest him. told police had arrested other nationalist leaders. escaped fajardo , ordered revolution start.


on october 27, in town of peñuelas, police surrounded , fired on caravan of nationalists, killing four. on october 30, nationalists staged uprisings in towns of ponce, mayagüez, naranjito, arecibo, utuado (utuado uprising), san juan (san juan nationalist revolt), , jayuya.


the first incident of nationalist uprisings occurred in pre-dawn hours of october 29. insular police surrounded house of mother of melitón muñiz santos, president of peñuelas nationalist party in barrio macaná, under pretext storing weapons nationalist revolt. without warning, police fired on house , gunfight ensued. 2 nationalists killed , 6 police officers wounded. nationalists meliton muñoz santos, roberto jaume rodriguez, estanislao lugo santiago, marcelino turell, william gutirrez , marcelino berrios arrested , accused of participating in ambush against local insular police.
