etymology

rusholme, unlike other place names in manchester suffix holme not true water meadow. name derives ryscum dative plural of old english rysc, rush meaning @ rushes. name recorded russum in 1235, ryssham in 1316 , rysholme in 1551.


early history

late in roman occupation of britain hoard of 200 gold coins hidden in valley of gore brook. these coins date 2nd , 3rd centuries ad , found birchfields road crosses brook in 1890s. kept in manchester museum.


records of name rusholme not appear until mid-13th century when russum mentioned; @ time known house existed @ platt replaced larger house of black , white construction home of platts until mid-18th century when present classical building replaced it. record of platt estate mentions nico ditch, anglo-saxon linear earthwork runs east–west through area , used administrative boundary. dates 8th or 9th century. tales of battles between danes , normans associated road names of danes road , norman road not accepted historians. black , white hall existed @ birch; built in 16th century.


the economy of area dependent on agriculture until 18th century; during 17th , 18th centuries there growth of cottage industries such spinning, weaving , brickmaking.

over victorian era, there several different socio-political meanings of rusholme. primarily, township based around general area known rusholme since @ least 13th century. area grew township, , beginning of 19th century, had own government responsible public health, roads, policing, poor relief, , other local government tasks. rusholme politically autonomous entity vital self-conception discrete area after lost political self-control upon incorporation manchester. low-cost terraced housing built between 1880 , 1930 dominates landscape, along sprawling council housing estate erected in interwar period.


political history

richard cobden, william royle (author of history of township), , thomas lowe (1815–1892) long-time residents. lowe began working baker , became flour dealer , later nurseryman , proprietor of dairy. prime minister h. h. asquith married here in 1877, miss helen melland.


conservative dame kathleen ollerenshaw twenty-six years 1 of councillors rusholme on manchester city council before becoming lord mayor of manchester 1975–1976. other local politicians included ward councillor paul shannon, liberal democrat , former deputy leader of manchester city council liberal democrat group defeated ahmed ali (labour) in may 2012. rabnawaz akbar elected labour councillor rusholme ward in may 2010. councillor akbar serves on citizenship , inclusion committee; end of term 2014.
