founding of brewster: town of brewster in established in spring of 1872, known many years hersey. first town established in nobles county st. paul , sioux city railroad, , named after general samuel f. hersey, lumber baron maine, , 1 of railroad s directors. first resident w. r. bennett, came take charge of railroad station. t. j. smith put first store run a. j. timlin many years. mr. a. o. conde established lumber yard , grain business, martin heiser opened second store, hotel opened mr. humphrey, , john iverson established blacksmith shop. of occurred in 1872, same year a. j. timlin became postmaster.


source of name: in 1880, st. paul , sioux city railroad purchased chicago, st. paul, minneapolis , omaha railway, or omaha road, , there station named hersey on latter road s track in wisconsin. in order avoid confusion, name of hersey changed, briefly nobles county station. thereafter, name brewster settled upon. there confusion regarding choice of name. e. f. drake, president of st. paul , sioux city railroad once stated name changed brewster after director of omaha road. brochure later put out chicago , north western railway company stated present name given in honor of brewster, town in barnstable county, massachusetts, named in honor of elder william brewster, 1 of first settlers of plymouth colony.


incorporation: fall of 1898, found 180 people lived in community of brewster. decided time had come incorporation. election held on december 14, 1898, , out of 28 ballots cast, 1 opposed idea of municipal government. on january 9, 1899, leon morris assumed duties first president of brewster village.
