miles during civil war


miles working crockery store clerk in boston when american civil war began. entered union army volunteer on september 9, 1861, , fought in many crucial battles. became lieutenant in 22nd regiment massachusetts volunteer infantry, , commissioned lieutenant colonel of 61st new york volunteer infantry regiment on may 31, 1862. promoted colonel after battle of antietam.


other battles participated in include fredericksburg, chancellorsville (during shot in neck , abdomen), , appomattox campaign. wounded 4 times in battle, on march 2, 1867, miles brevetted brigadier general in regular army in recognition of actions @ chancellorsville. again brevetted, time rank of major general, actions @ battle of spotsylvania court house. received medal of honor on july 23, 1892 gallantry @ chancellorsville. appointed brigadier general of volunteers of may 12, 1864, battles of wilderness , spotsylvania court house. on october 21, 1865, appointed major general of volunteers @ age of 26. after war, commandant of fort monroe, virginia, former confederate president jefferson davis held prisoner. during tenure @ fort monroe, miles forced defend himself against charges davis being mistreated.
