according pcbs, in 1997, approximately on 90% of gaza s population on age of 10 literate. of city s population, 140,848 enrolled in schools (39.8% in elementary school, 33.8% in secondary school, , 26.4% in high school). 11,134 people received bachelor diplomas or higher diplomas.

in 2006, there 210 schools in gaza; 151 run education ministry of palestinian national authority, 46 run united nations relief , works agency, , 13 private schools. total of 154,251 students enrolled , 5,877 teachers employed. downtrodden economy has affected education in gaza strip severely. in september 2007, unrwa survey in gaza strip revealed there 80% failure rate in schools grades 4 nine, 90% failure rates in mathematics. in january 2008, united nations children s fund reported schools in gaza had been canceling classes high on energy consumption, such information technology, science labs , curricular activities.

universities

gaza has many universities. 4 main universities in city al-azhar university – gaza, al-quds open university, al-aqsa university , islamic university of gaza. islamic university, consisting of ten facilities, founded group of businessmen in 1978, making first university in gaza. had enrollment of 20,639 students. al-azhar secular , founded in 1992. al-aqsa university established in 1991. al-quds open university established gaza educational region campus in 1992 in rented building in center of city 730 students. because of rapid increase of number of students, constructed first university owned building in nasser district. in 2006–07, had enrollment of 3,778 students.

public library

the public library of gaza located off wehda street , has collection of 10,000 books in arabic, english , french. total area of 1,410 square metres (15,200 sq ft), building consists of 2 floors , basement. library opened in 1999 after cooperation dating 1996 gaza under mayor aoun shawa, municipality of dunkerque, , world bank. library s primary objectives provide sources of information meets needs of beneficiaries, provide necessary facilities access available information sources, , organizing various cultural programs such as, cultural events, seminars, lectures, film presentations, videos, art , book exhibitions.
