al-shifa hospital ( cure ) founded in rimal district british mandate government in 1940s. housed in army barracks, provided quarantine , treatment febrile diseases. when egypt administered gaza, original department relocated , al-shifa became city s central hospital. when israel withdrew gaza strip after occupying in 1956 suez crisis, egyptian president gamal abdel nasser had al-shifa hospital expanded , improved. ordered establishment of second hospital in nasser district same name. in 1957, quarantine , febrile disease hospital rebuilt , named nasser hospital. today, al-shifa remains gaza s largest medical complex.


throughout late 1950s, new health administration, bandar gaza ( gaza region ), established , headed haidar abdel-shafi. bandar gaza rented several rooms throughout city set government clinics provided essential curative care.


the ahli arab hospital, founded in 1907 church missionary society (cms), destroyed in world war i. rebuilt southern baptist hospital in 1950s. in 1982, episcopal diocese of jerusalem took leadership , original name restored. al-quds hospital, located in tel al-hawa neighborhood , managed palestine red crescent society, second largest hospital in gaza.


in 2007, hospitals experienced power cuts lasting 8–12 hours daily , diesel required power generators in short supply. according world health organisation (who), proportion of patients given permits exit gaza medical care decreased 89.3% in january 2007 64.3% in december 2007.


in 2010, team of doctors al-durrah hospital in gaza spent year of training @ cystic fibrosis clinic @ hadassah medical center in jerusalem. upon return gaza, cystic fibrosis center established @ al-durrah, although serious cases referred hadassah.
